Project Reveal!

Well I will admit I have been seriously lacking with my posts! Sorry guys.... but I do have a wonderful new project reveal for you all! This job was amazing to work on. We had one snafu at the end with the floor tile however.

These clients wanted to use their existing floor tile. There are major red flags that should pop up when someone says that, especially if they want to change their cabinet configuration. 1) what will happen to the flooring that needs to be patched? 2) Is there existing tile even available anymore? 3) If the client claims to have extra tiles to patch the floor, do they really have enough?

We did our due diligence initially and found that yes in this instance we could in fact change their layout, and patch with the tile they had left over. They tricky part was their tile was discontinued so if there was an issues we were in trouble.

What you can't tell in this before photo is there is an air vent in the floor by the chairs closest to the frig. After all design was said and done, and we started production, the clients could better visualize how far the air vent was from the new island. This is where the existing tile issue came into play. They wanted to move the air vent out of the floor and into the toe kick of the cabinet. Normally no problem! But with the tile on a diamond pattern, and us already having patch work to do, their extra tile was not enough. We needed exactly 1 more box of tile.

We went to every tile showroom in the area looking for something that would blend. We looked at options to create a tile "rug" around the island with a new tile. We called the vendor and every vendor that carried their tile looking for straggling boxes. These clients lucked out and we found 1 box, in Mexico. After numerous calls and emails to the vendor who had the tile about the importance not a single tile breaking, they shipped it. Preparing for the worst, I warned the clients if any tile came in broken we would still have to find some solution. When the box arrived, luck was again on their side. Not 1 piece broken. With that we finished the job and you can't even tell.

Lessons Learned:

1) If you are using existing floor, have verified the availability of the replacement floor, no changes should be made in the field.

2) Do not reuse an existing floor at all costs!!!!!

3) If you are using existing floor, always have a contingent plan in place before any demo starts.
